SUPERFROG XXIII Triathlon is finally over. After a few delays and the
tragic events in this country, the 2001 Naval Special Warfare SUPERFROG is
history. A great time was had by all who competed and supported this race.
Proceeds of this Navy SEALs’ triathlon benefits both The WARRIOR Foundation and MWR/SWR.

Due to heightened security requirements at the Naval Air Station, our
previously invited civilian triathletes and support crew members could not
participate. All understood this last minute change and look forward to next
year. Their entries are being refunded. Thank You for your patience and
understanding.

The previously mentioned WARRIOR Foundation is a non-profit organization
that provides scholarships and counseling to dependents of SEALs and other
members of Special Operations Forces killed in action or in training
operations. Another organization that will benefit from the SUPERFROG is the
UDT-SEAL Association who, also, forms the core of the SUPERFROG Committee.

The race course was as it has always been for the last 17 years at the
Naval Air Station at North Island, Coronado. Consistent. The ocean was like
glass, the surf was negligible and the water temp was 57 degrees. The new
bike course had a few 90 degree turns and the traffic circle taken out but
the same rough road sections remained. The run on the soft sand and pavement
remained the same except, this time, there really was an armed guard down by
the ice plants and fence. No one ran on the ice plants. Air temp was 70 and
some winds were up for the bike ride. The sun played hide-and-seek, but,
otherwise, a cool day.

CONGRATULATIONS to Overall Male and Female winners LTJG Kevin CHILDRE from EOD/MU3 and Kelli MONAHAN from Coronado. Kevin prepared himself for this year’s race by placing 2nd and 3rd in the last two SUPERFROGs and training in the Gulf during the last few months. Kevin’s time was 4 hours, 29 minutes and 49 seconds. Kelli is a long time competitor in the SUPERFROG having won the overall once a few years ago. Kelli’s time was 5 hours, 16 minutes and 3 seconds.

CONGRATULATIONS to SEAL Team One’s relay “Team 1 A/B” for coming in 1st in all of the relay teams. Swimmer Steve Bryant, biker Curt Cronin and
runner Rich Witt did the SUPERFROG in 4 hours, 28 minutes and 10 seconds.
The end of line timer had the overall time correct, but the run timer had the
computed run time at 1 hour, 15 minutes and 10 seconds. Fast, but not quite.
Lap averages were 14 minutes 20 seconds. So... 14:20 x 6 = 1 hour 26
minutes. Still a fast run.

CONGRATULATIONS to VSW MCM for winning the Admiral’s Perpetual Trophy. This award is given to the command with the five fastest times. The combined times must include three individuals (minimum) and two relay teams (maximum). This year, VSW MCM charged ahead with five individuals and three relay teams. They get to keep the Perpetual Trophy for a year.

The Diann Ridgway Award for Perseverance goes to Jacky Richards, wife of
Admiral Tom Richards. This award recognizes the perseverances of the
SUPERFROG race as well as life today. Jacky received severe burns when their home burned down a few weeks ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jacky and Admiral Richards.

The Moki Martin Award for Inspiration is given to a racer on the
SUPERFROG course that suffers a mishap and still goes on to finish the race.
This year the award goes to Toni Marano who took a spill on her bike by the
carrier piers’ crane tracks. In obvious pain, Toni inspired all by finishing
the bike and run. She called a few days later to say she was doing okay.
How ‘bout the bike?

The 2001 SUPERFROG T-shirts are being re-printed. $15/20.00 ea. Check
out www.sdbeachlife.com for more info or to see the t-shirt. The frog on the
back with the attitude was designed by Jason James, son of CDR Jack James,
age 14. Under the frog’s left hand is the WTC bombing date of 010911. The
original SUPERFROG logo is on the left front.

Wayne Brandt is a long time competitor who has won the last two
SUPERFROGs. He blazed thru the swim but had some problems on the bike.
Wayne took off on the run, but suffered a back spasm and could not finish the
third lap. He called later that evening to say he was all right. Next year,
Wayne...
Those that stuck around for the end of the SUPERFROG were treated to a very
special patriotic event as DR Tom Damato of NMCSD finished the last lap of
his run hoisting the “Stars and Stripes”. A moment to remember. Thanks,
Tom... The beautiful awards for this year’s SUPERFROG were hand-made out of exotic woods by retired SEAL Master Chief Louis McIntosh. They resemble the German and Japanese scullies or obstacles placed on the beaches to damage allied landing crafts and thus, caused the formation of the Naval Combat Demolition Units and the Underwater Demolition Teams of WWII... Who was that “Naked Warrior” skinning the SUPERFROG’s cold swim? Sporting only swim trunks, swim cap, a recent Hawaiian tan and a “frozen” smile was CDR Evin Thompson, Chief of Staff at Group One. The other “Naked Warrior” was 50 plus years old retired Master Chief, Rick Knepper. Let that be a lesson to you young’uns... I have a really nice bicycle pump that was left at the Transition Area. Call me at 619.435.3214 to identify and retrieve.

Next year, the SUPERFROG plans to race at the Naval Amphibious Base. The
swim will be at Yellow One Beach, the bike will go up and down the Silver
Strand (Hiway 75) and the run will be around the SEAL Teams’ compounds, and
yes, still circuit-style with cold surf, winds and soft sand. It would not
be the SUPERFROG, otherwise. We anticipate a larger triathlon and our
civilian friends will be invited. After 17 years at North Island, the
twenty-fourth SUPERFROG will come home to the “STRAND”. See you next year.
More to follow...

HEARTY HOO-YAAs and IMUA,
Moki Martin
