SUPERFROGGERS!

It's 9 days out from the 2002 NSW SUPERFROG XXIV Triathlon. If you haven't
entered, you've got until the deadline, COB next Thursday, 12 September,
2002. Entries are still available, as we haven't reached the 200 individual
and 50 relay team limit. Check out active.com, mwrtoday.com and
sdbeachlife.com for entry forms. Or email me for my last 11 hard-copy
forms.

The SUPERFROG is shaping up pretty well. 8-time winner and the Grand Lady
of the IRONMAN, Hawaii, Paula NEWBY-FRASER, is returning to do SUPERFROG. Paula won here a couple of years ago and is tuning up with this SUPERFROG to return to Kona. Good Luck, Paula!

Also returning is 3 time (or is it 4?) winner of the SUPERFROG, Wayne
BRANDT. Wayne is returning this year with a vengeance after a tremendous
back muscle spasm, last year, brought his 2nd run lap to a screeching halt.
I believe he's ready.

The VSW guys from the Amphibious base must relinquish the Naval Special
Warfare Perpetual Team Trophy after holding it for a year. This year, the
team trophy will be open to all, not just the NSW commands. Remember, the
five fastest finishers' combined times wins. Up to three finishers can be
relay teams.

Navy Recycling is the SUPERFROG¹s presenting sponsor this year. This is a
great program that provides for solid waste diversion and recycling
awareness. Check out their booth and bins at SUPERFROG.

The SUPERFROG is open to civilian individual triathletes and relay teams.
They must, however, have military/DOD sponsors. For those civilian racers
without military sponsors, we will have shuttle vans with military/ DOD
sponsors on board. These vans will be at the same location on both Friday's
spaghetti dinner and Saturday's race to pick you up, take you to the races,
and dinner, and return you to your car. These twelve passenger vans will
hold 3-5 racers with bikes and guests. All racers and guests must have
pictured ID cards. Those civilian racers needing sponsorship must email the
names and addresses of all in their party to our Registration Director,
Amanda Pearson, APearson@caldiegopva.org, to get on the master list. No
name on list, no race on base.

If you¹ve a military sponsor already, you're fine. If not, check out the
schedule below.

Friday, 13 SEP, 5:30 PM TO 6:30 PM, Park on 3rd Ave and I St, Coronado.
Saturday, 14 SEP, 5:30 AM to 7:00 AM, Same location.
After getting off the Coronado Bridge heading west, you're on 3rd Ave. 6
blocks to Orange Ave, cross intersection, 6 blocks to I St. Park will be on
your right.

This new service should open the great, all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner up
to a lot more people. Meet the racers, staff, sponsors, etc. Check in,
pick up your race goodie bag with T-shirt, bib nos, swim cap, goggles, etc.
Get the mandatory bike check there. Check out the T/A, sniff the sea air,
taste the ground, run on the sand... Whatever. Any registered racer can
show up to check in, pick up their racers' bag, bike check, etc... The
spaghetti dinner will cost all, racers and guests, $9.00 each. If you've
pre-registered with the dinner, you're on. If not, email Amanda,
APearson@caldiegopva.org.

I've passed the below motel info out to a couple of out of town groups.
When I called last night, rooms were available at all of them on SEP 13 and
14. Coronado Island Inn, 888.436.6935, 85.00 a night. Crown City Inn &
Bistro, 800.422.1173, 119.00 1 bd/ 129.00 2 bd, 2 nite min. Best Western
Suites, 800.528.1234, 185.00 a nite. All motels are 8-9 blocks from main
gate, 6 blocks from van shuttle pick up point.

There will be a bike alternate course on the bike map on www.sdbeachlife.com
and on mwrtoday.com. As usual with SUPERFROG, the bike course makes an
eleventh hour change. A NAS road-paving schedule will impact the bike
course in the vicinity of McCAIN Blvd. We are watching this real close and
we put the old course, around the circle of flags, in stand-by. We also
have a couple of other routes. Hopefully, NAS will be done with this
much-needed paving by race day. If you¹ve done the bike course here, you
know what I mean.

There are four relay teams looking for swimmers, bikers or runners. I know,
join them all together. Not that easy. Three of these relay teams have at
least one wheel-chair racer ready to go. Please let me know if you are
interested in teaming up with these teams.

Whew! This is a long newsletter update, I know. If you¹ve any questions,
don¹t hesitate to email me. More info on the specific race courses to
follow.

Hearty Hoo-Yaas, Aloha and IMUA!

SUPERFROGGERS,

WELCOME, Registered RACERS!

GREETINGS from the 2002 Navy Recycles Program and Naval Special Warfare's
SUPERFROG XXIV Triathlon! The SUPERFROG staff is cranked up and ready to
give you another tough "Race with the U.S. Navy SEALs" triathlon!

The twenty-fourth SUPERFROG is on for Saturday, 14 September, at its
traditional location at the Naval Air Station, North Island, Coronado, CA.
0700 (7AM) wheel-chair racers start, 0730 individual racers start and 0800
relay teams start.

The race is 25 days away and is limited to 200 individual racers and 50
relay teams. You will be receiving updates every few days, starting with
this one, on race matters, race intelligence and superfluous rumors. Of
importance are NAS Base security/ civilian racers and the spaghetti dinner.

Although the 2002 SUPERFROG is open to all military/ Department of Defense
(DOD) personnel, the race is again an invitational to civilian racers. This
means a civilian racer must be sponsored by a military/ DOD worker with a
vehicle possessing a base decal. We've received permission to allow a few
racers with family/ friends per vehicle. The driver/owner of the car must
be the military/ DOD person. A list of all persons in the vehicle must be
presented to the Main Gate guards, if asked. All must possess a picture id
card, i.e. driver's license. A master list of the racers will be on the
gate.

We've already paired some racers up with active duty racers and volunteers.
That'll still continue. We will also have a few shuttle vans that will
leave from and return to a location a couple of blocks outside the gate.
This, also, will be critically checked at the gate so, again, an established
list of all on-board must be presented to the gate guard. Schedule and
location will follow.

This security requirements will apply to both the Friday, 13 SEP, spaghetti
dinner night and Saturday, 14 SEP, race day. If you're a civilian racer
wanting to race and you've met the registration requirements, we'll get you
on and off the base, both times.

Please email me with your NAS, North Island base accessibility needs.

Another SUPERFROG issue is the Friday night spaghetti dinner. First, it's
an all you can eat, red sauce only, sit-down no-ties allowed dinner at the
Island Club near the Transition Area at North Island. It's to eat, meet,
pick-up race package, bicycle check, full race slide brief, smell the
pre-race air, taste the pavement, run on the sand, check out "The Surf"
event. You may also check out the bike and run courses. If you forgot to
sign up for the dinner, please contact APearson@caldiegopva.org to fix it.
It's only $9.00US.

On the entry form, some have interpreted the entry fee to include to include
the spaghetti dinner. In the past (2 years ago), we included it in with
entry fees. But, rising costs, bad economy, gerbils are broke, etc...
etc... We will politely emaill the forgetful ones. It's $9.00US each, for
all attending the dinner. Another good deel!

This is another call for military/ DOD sponsor volunteers to drive civilian
racers on and off the base. Please contact me. I can only pay in t-shirts.

Racers looking for unfilled teams. I have biker/runner Valerie looking for
a team. Paul's relay team's is looking for a swimmer. Please contact me.

Our last update mentioned a professional timing company, WB Timing, will
time the SUPERFROG. Our mistake. The ever-watchful eagle-eyed NSWC/ BUD/S
SEAL trainees will have that honor. Holland's Bicycles of Coronado and
Mission Cyclery of Chula Vista will do the required bike-checks. No one on
North Island has dug up the roads yet, but, we still got 25 days. Remember,
heavier tires for SUPERFROG.

Entry/ registration info is up on active.com, mwrtoday and
www.sdbeachlife.com. Hard-copies of the entries are also available at all
San Diego area MWR gyms and Naval Station's Outdoors Equipment facility,
Holland's Bicycles of Coronado, Mission Cyclery of Chula Vista, McP's Island
Pub in Coronado, Naval Special Warfare Center (BUD/S), Naval Special Warfare
Command, and the VA Medical Center/ Cal-Diego PVA offices.

Check out the race maps on www.sdbeachlife.com.

SUPERFROGGERS,

GREETINGS From The 2002 Navy Recycles Program and Naval Special Warfare's
SUPERFROG XXIV Triathlon!

The 2002 SUPERFROG will be held on Saturday, 14 September, at its
traditional location at the Naval Air Station, North Island, Coronado, CA.

The 2002 SUPERFROG is open to all Department of Defense (DOD) personnel.
Due to the events of 9/11 last year, civilian triathletes were not allowed
on North Island to race. That was a SUPERFROG first in its 23 year history.
This year, we've received permission to allow civilian participation in the
SUPERFROG through individual military/ DOD sponsorship. This means a
civilian racer must be sponsored by a DOD worker with a vehicle possessing a
base decal, one-to-one.

Designed by Navy SEALs, the course is run circuit-style starting with a 1.2
mile open ocean swim (Two 1000 yd laps separated by a 200 yard run), a 56
mile flat and slightly rough bike ride (Five 11.2 mile laps) and a 13.1 mile
run ( Six 2.2 mile laps on both sand and pavement surfaces).

Entry/ registration info is up on active.com. Hard-copies of
the entries are also available at all San Diego area MWR gyms and outdoors
facilities, www.mwrtoday.com, Holland's Bicycles of Coronado, Mission
Cyclery of Chula Vista, McP's Island Pub in Coronado, NSWC/ BUD/S, WARCOM,
the VA Medical Center/ Cal-Diego PVA offices and at my home.

The SUPERFROG is entering its twenty-fourth official year as the longest
running half distance triathlon and the 3rd longest and continuous running
race behind only the Coronado Optimist and IRONMAN triathlons.

The spaghetti dinner on friday night before SUPERFROG at the Island Club
at North Island is $9.00 each for racers and guests. The dinner will
include: the passing out of race packets, bike inspections, a slide brief,
viewing the course and transition area, and all-you-can-eat spaghettidinner.

WB Timing will time the SUPERFROG. Holland's Bicycles of Coronado and
Mission Cyclery of Chula Vista will do bike-checks. No one on North Island
has dug up the roads yet, but, we still got 2 months. Remember, heavier
tires for SUPERFROG.

It is my sad duty to tell you that Bill Early, SUPERFROG and San Diego Int'l
Triathlon Swim Director, ex-Navy SEAL, father, competitor, team-mate and
friend, passed away on the 4th of July, during the Coronado one mile swim.
His swim, his beach and his day. Bill Early was a consumate swimmer and a
fierce competitor. He will be missed...
