San
Diego Surfers
Women's Rugby Club Team History
The San
Diego Surfers Women's Rugby Club is the only women's club in San Diego.
We originated in January 1975 as Ombush, sponsored by the Old Mission
Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC).
In 1980,
we changed our name and became known as the Rio Grande Surfers under the
sponsorship of Fred Thompson and the Guadalajara National Philharmonic.
This year also saw the Surfers become the first international women's
rugby club to set foot on the Kiwi shores of New Zealand. In 2001, we
still boast having an undefeated record against international teams.
In 1997,
we applied for non-profit status and officially changed our name to the
San Diego Surfers Women's Rugby Club. We have had the honor to play an
exhibition game during halftime of a San Diego Chargers professional football
game, and we have appeared on the Channel 8 news twice promoting women's
rugby in San Diego.
As hosts
of the annual Champagne Classic, the premier women's rugby tournament
for California women's rugby, the Surfers attract teams from around the
country. Each year the competition gets better and California is considered
to be one of the best areas in the United States for women's rugby. Our
goal is to further the growth of the sport of rugby in San Diego.
